Nickel-plated, extremely lightweight, and available in a polished or aged finish. There's no need to change the mounting bolts, as your existing ones can be reused. In the 1950s, Gibson used aluminum for their Les Paul tailpieces. For cost reasons, they later switched to zinc.
Zinc tailpieces remain standard hardware on all Gibson models to this day, with the exception of the Custom Shop line. All Gibson-style copies also only feature zinc tailpieces. The aluminum tailpieces weigh only a quarter of the zinc ones and produce a significantly more refined sound.
The string vibration is transmitted with a fuller, more nuanced sound. Even played acoustically, the guitar sounds more "acoustic" and considerably more resonant. When plugged in, the sound is warmer and rounder, with more midrange and more overtones compared to the dry and muffled sound of the zinc material.
